Helping others to cope with cancer

any of us have had loved ones go through cancer treatment. But no matter how much support we give, we can never know how hard the cancer journey truly is for the person going through it.

That’s where Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust is unique. It was set up to help women (and men) in the local area who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. What makes them different is that much of their team and their support workers have all been through breast cancer themselves. They know – they really know – what it’s like to receive such a diagnosis and treatment, while trying to carry on with the juggle of family, work and everyday life. Along with the physical impacts there are often financial pressures too, sometimes they’re unable to work, as well as the extra travel costs to get treatment.

Z Energy, an energy company with service stations throughout New Zealand, wanted to help Breast Cancer Support Services to help their clients. They paid-it-forward $300 worth of petrol vouchers to Breast Cancer Support who passed these on to their clients, meaning there was one less stress for them to worry about.

"We receive regular petrol vouchers, and they are amazing to be able to give to clients who have to travel a long way to go in for treatment. Often, they are at a time when they are struggling financially, so, to be able to give a $50 petrol voucher is a wonderful way of supporting them. We’re really appreciative of GoGenerosity and Z service stations for providing those vouchers."

Corporate partners S&L Land Specialists and the Spark Business Hub BOP were also in on the action, providing generous pay-it-forwards that allowed Z Energy to give out such a large sum of vouchers to Breast Cancer Support Services.

Feeling left out of the paying-it-forward cycle? Just add a little (50c, $1, it all counts) to your bill next time you’re filling up at Z Energy. Or head to our marketplace to see other generous businesses near you.

Then, we can all be part of helping to meet needs in the community.
